DGN and DWG Families to RFA

DGN and DWG Families to RFA

Converting to Revit is a wonderful, euphoric experience which can often be followed by the sudden heart crushing knowledge of needing to convert hundreds or thousands of files to Revit Families.

Fear not as we are about to share a stop-gap measure!

You may notice that bringing in a DGN or DWG file into Revit will disappear when you use the Explode command on it.

However! Bring the DGN or DWG into a Revit Family Template.

Caveats:

  • Each Type will need to be a separate family

  • Imported geometries will generally be more detailed and therefore more graphically demanding

While this will save you hundreds of People Hours in starting up with converting to Revit, it is only a temporary method.

Ultimately you will need to replace it with a full Revit Family - even if it is only tracing the imported geometry with Revit native geometry. When you do this, it is recommended to simplify the geometry as well. One of our future posts will be a more detailed look into Family creation rules to keep your model in the best shape you can.
